A road map to 2050

The report unveils the renewable energies should be extended at least six times faster to allow the world to comply with the settled objectives in The Paris Agreement.

The Climate Agreement from 2015 looks for, at least, limiting the increase of the global temperature under 2° C in the current century, in comparison with the preindustrial levels. The renewable energies, in combination with an efficient energy which improves fast, shape the cornerstone of a viable climate solution.

Maintaining the increase of the global temperature under 2 degrees is technically feasible, it would also be economically, socially and environmentally more beneficial than the resulting from the current policies and plans. Nevertheless, the global energetic system should go through a deep transformation, from one based mainly on fuel fossil to one which improves the efficiency and it is based on renewable energies. An global energetic transformation of this type, considered as the culmination of the “energetic transition” which is taking place in several countries, can lead to a more prosperous and inclusive world.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is an intergovernmental organisation supporting countries in their transition to a sustainable energy future and serves as the principal platform for international cooperation, a centre of excellence, and a repository of policy, technology, resource and financial knowledge on renewable energy. IRENA promotes the widespread adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy, including bioenergy, geothermal, hydropower, ocean, solar and wind energy in the pursuit of sustainable development, energy access, energy security and low-carbon economic growth and prosperity.
